A drawing exercise: sketch a mug without outlining it. Use only the shadow underneath, the dark interior, and the change in tone along its side. It is surprisingly hard to resist drawing the rim. Do you start with outlines or blocks of light and shade?

Try drawing an ordinary parked car in a snowy yard using only three values: the paper, a middle grey, and almost black. Leave most of the snow untouched and save the darkest marks for the tyres and the space beneath the car. What everyday scene would you choose for a limited-palette study?

Imagine spending an afternoon carving a snow sculpture, knowing the next warm day will erase it. Would the short lifespan make the work more satisfying, or would you want to keep a photograph of every stage?

Deep green shadows, a bright patch of sky, and a tiny person tucked into the landscape can suggest a whole summer afternoon. I like illustrations that leave room for a story instead of explaining everything. Which colours say summer to you?

The yellow and orange pull me in immediately, then the blue changes the balance of the whole painting. I like that there is no single obvious place to stop looking. Would you hang something this bold in a quiet room?
